The Empress of Australia is a personal history of one man's journey towards self discovery and freedom from row house Britain. In his book, Smith speaks for all generations who have faced untold hardships in their quest for dignity and purpose during times of financial, political and familial upheaval. Harry Leslie Smith sketches a real, sometimes amusing and sometimes melancholic portrait of Britain in the late 1940s. Yet, like so many other returning veterans from the Second World War, Smith stumbled onwards through the era known as the Age of Austerity to confront the horrors of his childhood and the innate injustice of a society divided by class. At first, Harry Leslie Smith finds himself ill equipped for this brave new world where Britain has lost its empire and is bankrupt. Recently demobbed from the RAF, Smith and his German war bride must try to adjust to a civilian society that is scarred from not only the war but the harsh reality of living in peacetime Britain. So begins Harry Leslie Smith's bitter-sweet memoir: The Empress of Australia which depicts life in post-war Yorkshire. In the winter of 1948, a post-war darkness felled Britain and happiness, like sweets, was tightly rationed.

Las Vegas employs mercenaries like Angel Velasquez as “Water Knives”, hired to “cut” water for the Southern Nevada Water Authority and its boss, Catherine Case. States like Nevada and Arizona clash viciously over shares of the Colorado River while bigwig California looks on, and states like Texas and New Mexico have long since given up the ghost. Drought has ravaged the American Southwest, changing the physical and political landscape. Indeed, Bacigalupi paints a rather bleak, hellish picture of a place where water is scarce and more valuable than gold, a resource for which people are willing to kill and destroy. No, it would be for water – fresh, drinkable water without which none of us can survive. He used to be fond of saying that if the civilizations were to crumble or if the whole world were to go to war, it wouldn’t be over things like a pandemic or nuclear war. It put me in mind of an eccentric high school teacher I once had, who was a little obsessed with doomsday scenarios. In this day and age where one can’t even walk into a bookstore’s sci-fi section without a few dozen dystopian titles getting thrown in your face, I have to say Paolo Bacigalupi’s The Water Knife really impacted me in a big way. Narrator: Almarie Guerra | Length: 14 hrs Audiobook Review: The Water Knife by Paolo BacigalupiĪ review copy of this book was provided to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. The bees became a guiding force in May’s life, teaching her about family and community, loyalty and survival and the unequivocal relationship between a mother and her child. It was during this pivotal time in May’s childhood that she learned to take care of herself, forged an unbreakable bond with her grandfather and opened her eyes to the magic and wisdom of nature. Her mother had receded into a volatile cycle of madness and despair and spent most days locked away in the bedroom. May was drawn to the art of beekeeping as an escape from her troubled reality. That first close encounter with a bee was at once terrifying and exhilarating for May, and in that moment she discovered that everything she needed to know about life and family was right before her eyes, in the secret world of bees. She was five years old, her parents had recently split and suddenly she found herself in the care of her grandfather, an eccentric beekeeper who made honey in a rusty old military bus in the yard. Meredith May recalls the first time a honeybee crawled on her arm. The Honey Bus: A Memoir of Loss, Courage, and a Girl Saved by BeesĪn extraordinary story of a young girl who finds solace in one of nature’s most mysterious and beguiling creatures: the honeybee. Figuring they would make for great stories, she figured she would share them with the rest of the mortal world, by writing science fiction, fantasy, and romance. The white knight that showed up to battle the dragon, and Susan liked the guy so much that she figured she’d marry him and now have a beautiful dragonlet that looks exactly like a little girl unless you use a magic mirror.įortunately, despite being stuck in this dimension, Susan’s still able to use her dragon vision to see all of the most interesting goings-on in the multiverse. And there’s a dog from Hades who has three heads, now with three bodies to accompany them. Just as soon as she became old enough, she immediately applied for her alien abduction, but got wait-listed, so made her lair out in the desert to wait out the coming zombie apocalypse with a couple of magical cats able to appear underfoot in an instant, typically at the steps. She just accepted that she would have to live a mortal life, but just was not going to go around and be all boring about it. Susan Trombley was born a dragon, but was forced to take a human form in order to fit into those tiny little baby carriers. So you can store and upload your files with confidence and trust. (.) Soseki's Kokoro has an unforgettable atmosphere of the loneliness and mysteriousness of man's relationship with man." - Anthony Thwaite, Times Literary Supplement " Kokoro is perhaps his masterpiece: a slice of nineteenth-century naturalism purified and transmuted so that its final effect is poetic.
The book also explores the idea of sexuality and manhood, which Baldwin so perfectly dissects and critiques. The protagonist, David, is a deeply damaged character - he yearns for a life he desperately wants, but the society he lives in (as well as his own fear) prevents him from seeking that life, and he is depressed as a result. Baldwin’s writing is powerful and vivid, and so perfectly expressed the themes of the book. Giovanni’s Room is a short novel - only about 150 pages long - and yet it packs a massive punch. This book is devastating, beautiful and haunting all at the same time - which is definitely a theme of Baldwin’s novels. I’ve wanted to read James Baldwin for a very long time, and I have to admit, I’m so glad I started with Giovanni’s Room, his quintessential queer classic. The green eyed serpent is a symbol of demon magic. She tells the green eyed serpent to leave. Now, Mike Huckabee invites you to reconnect with the purpose of this powerful holiday in his book, A Simple Christmas. These true stories will help you smile, take a deep breath, and maybe slow down your own holiday treadmill. Now Huckabee recounts twelve Christmas memories-often funny, sometimes deeply moving-that range from his childhood in Arkansas to his years as a young husband and father to his time as a governor and then a presidential candidate. The hard part, in today’s crazy world, is remembering that those simple things are the most precious of all. Going back to the Nativity, Christmas is supposed to be about simple things: faith, love, family, and hope. But according to Mike Huckabee (who was a pastor before getting into politics), that was never God’s intention. And I hope I don’t forget to think about the greatest sacrifice of all, God’s gift of Himself.”Ĭhristmas has become synonymous with shopping, overindulging, competition, and stress. “Every Christmas, I still think about that guitar and the sacrifice it represented. |
